Dr. Leonard Coldwell: An Alternative Voice in Natural Health Worth Revisiting in 2026

Dr. Leonard Coldwell has spent decades exploring alternative approaches to natural health and healing. Drawing on his personal experiences, years of working with people facing health challenges, and extensive writing and speaking, he has developed his own perspectives on stress, nutrition, illness, healing and the body’s ability to recover.

Some of what he was talking about years ago is particularly interesting to revisit in 2026. An older interview with Coldwell recently caught my attention, and I thought it was worth sharing—along with a little background about the man, his work, and where you can explore his ideas further.

Who Is Dr. Leonard Coldwell?

Leonard Coldwell is an author, lecturer and natural-health advocate best known for developing what he calls the Instinct Based Medical System, or IBMS.

His work has covered a wide range of subjects over the years, including nutrition, cancer, chronic stress, lifestyle, natural approaches to health and the body’s own healing processes.

Coldwell describes IBMS as an approach that looks beyond an isolated symptom or condition and considers the many factors that may be affecting a person’s health. Finding and addressing underlying causes, rather than focusing exclusively on symptoms, is a recurring theme in his work.

An Interest in Health That Started Early

Coldwell has described his interest in health and healing as deeply personal. In telling his own story, he has spoken about confronting serious illness within his family when he was young, particularly his mother’s cancer. He describes that experience as an important influence on the direction his life eventually took.

Over the years, he went on to work with people facing serious health challenges, write extensively and lecture internationally. His experiences eventually contributed to the development of IBMS and to books covering health, illness, stress and related subjects.

More Than One Health Topic

Coldwell has written numerous books in both English and German.

Among his English-language titles are Instinct Based Medicine: How to Survive Your Illness…and Your Doctor, The Only Answer to Cancer, The Only Answer to Stress and The Only Answer to Success. His bibliography also includes German-language works dealing with health, stress and related subjects.

One of the things that makes Coldwell interesting to listen to is the number of connections he makes among subjects that are often discussed separately.

Nutrition may lead to a discussion about illness. A discussion about illness may lead to the body’s natural healing processes. Food, water, lifestyle and stress can all become parts of the same conversation.

That makes an interview with Coldwell somewhat difficult to summarize—and I’m not sure summarizing it would be particularly useful anyway.

I’d rather let him speak for himself.

An Older Interview Worth Revisiting in 2026

The following interview isn’t new, and that’s actually part of why I wanted to share it.

Listening to an older interview gives us an interesting opportunity. We can hear what someone was talking about years ago and consider those ideas from where we stand today.

Coldwell talks freely and directly, and the interview provides a much better introduction to his personality and way of thinking than I could give by trying to condense his work into a few paragraphs.

Listen for the subjects that catch your attention. Notice the connections he makes. One idea may lead you to investigate another subject entirely.

Alkalizing the Body

One part of the interview that especially caught my attention was Coldwell’s emphasis on alkalizing the body.

He isn’t talking about trying to change the pH of the blood, which the body carefully regulates. His discussion is much more practical and realistic. He talks about whole foods, greens and other healthy dietary choices as ways of supporting a healthier internal environment.

This happens to overlap with a subject I have researched and worked with for many years: alkaline ionized water.

Food and water obviously aren’t the same thing, but Coldwell’s discussion raises an interesting question about what we put into our bodies every day—including our food, water and minerals—and the role those choices may play in overall health.

If that part of the interview interests you, I’ve written extensively about alkaline ionized water, hydration, molecular hydrogen and other potential benefits at Alkaline Water Plus.

The Body’s Ability to Heal

Another thread running through Coldwell’s work is his interest in the body’s own healing mechanisms.

It’s something we sometimes take for granted. A cut closes. A broken bone repairs itself. The immune system responds to threats. Tissues repair and regenerate to varying degrees, while the body continually regulates thousands of processes without our consciously directing them.

Coldwell’s work encourages people to think about what may help those natural processes work well—and what may get in their way.

That naturally leads into questions about nutrition, movement, sleep, water, environment and other everyday choices.
